Summary:

In high-risk environments, traditional indemnity insurance can become either inaccessible or ineffective. Using a unified mean-variance framework that incorporates fixed costs, heterogeneous premium loadings, and budget constraints, the authors compare the performance of indemnity insurance and parametric insurance.

Their findings show that, once realistic constraints are taken into account, parametric insurance can provide greater welfare for risk-averse policyholders without relying on behavioral assumptions. This research offers new insights into the growing role of parametric solutions and highlights the potential benefits of hybrid contracts combining indemnity and parametric insurance.
