Summary This doctoral thesis studies the dynamics of financial markets when extreme events and political variables are taken into account. It is recognized that financial crises as well as national and international political events have a significant impact on global stock markets, and this impact has become even more important with the increased integration of financial markets, such that a shock in one country can quickly have repercussions on other markets.
