Summary This report presents the results obtained from a study exploring the possible applications of the expert system technique in energy conservation. The objective of the work is not to implement fully operational expert systems, but rather to find "paths" to achieve this. We try to identify the problems that can be treated by the expert systems technique, to describe the general architecture and the main elements for each system considered. To illustrate the feasibility of the proposals, the example of some rule bases or knowledge-based models is incorporated in each part and the rather detailed development of a prototype intended for the construction, validity and exploitation of global energy balances serves as the main demonstration.
