Summary The share of healthcare expenditure in France represents 12% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It is second only to the United States and the Netherlands. This share is very close to other countries such as Germany. Hospitals account for a large share of spending. However, this is the most controlled share. Hospitals now account for only 36% of health care spending in France, compared with 43% in 1983. So, yes, hospitals are expensive, but they are becoming less so.
