Summary The creation of the banks that became modern central banks spans the 18th century (the Bank of Amsterdam, the Sveriges Riksbank and the Bank of England) to the 20th century (the Federal Reserve System in the United States and many others). Founded in very different contexts, these banks have, at the outset, little in common.
