Summary This article looks at gender-based inequalities in management careers in four general directorates of two ministries - economic and financial on the one hand, and social on the other - which contrast from the point of view of their feminization and the types of career. The survey is based on a hundred or so life stories of women and men. Beyond family upbringing and unequal access to the royal road of the ÉNA, the career blockages of women are detected at the heart of administrations, through the rules of availability, geographical mobility, and self-imposed homophilic co-optation. Policies of professional equality are struggling to change them, but they are bringing about a greater awareness of inequalities.
