Summary This paper reviews the economic literature on gender segregation by occupation and field of study. In particular, we discuss the reasons that may explain the strong lack of women in science, engineering, computer science or mathematics-related occupations. After recalling how they are legitimate, we finally suggest some potentially effective public interventions to counteract this phenomenon of gender segregation by occupation.
