Summary This study focuses on the application of the principle of coopetition in idea crowdsourcing platforms, namely the simultaneous use of cooperation and competition to mobilize the crowd. We present this new model and explore, through a conceptual framework and an empirical study of sixty platforms, to what extent the principle of coopetition is applied by these platforms. We show that the sites studied exhibit mostly attenuated or marked forms of coopetition. We discuss the practical and theoretical implications of these results.
