The conference marks the 5th year of the Chair. It closes the scientific day “Women in scientific carrers: facts and levers” on the theme of the determinants and consequences of the lower presence of girls and women in scientific fields and careers, and highlights the research projects supported by the Chair. As of 2019, the Women and Science Chair is supporting 30 research projects representing more than 20 countries around the world.

In France, girls do better academically than boys. However, these results conceal an under-representation of girls in the scientific streams leading to the best-paid professions. It is now vital to gain an in-depth and well-founded understanding of the reasons for this situation and the consequences it has.

And that’s the whole purpose of the Chair for Women in Science: to support and develop academic research that can provide relevant insights and answers to the many questions that arise: Is it a question of tastes, skills, environment, self-confidence, representations? What impact does the low presence of women in science have on science itself, on society as a whole and on the place of women in society? What public policies should be pursued to put an end to this situation?
