Louis Malissard is a PhD candidate researching "Green electricity and the market for guarantees of origin: what impact on the energy transition?"

He has read for you Comment bifurquer. Les principes de la planification écologique, by Cédric Durand and Razmig Keucheyan, 2024.

What is it about?

In this essay, Cédric Durand and Razmig Keucheyan examine our economic trajectory in the face of the ecological crisis and advocate for an alternative to "green capitalism" based on ecological planning. They propose replacing an economy driven by profitability with one organized around social needs and the planet's physical limits. At the heart of this shift: democracy and collective decision-making as essential conditions for an ecologically and socially sustainable path.

What did you find particularly interesting about this book?

The fact that it seeks answers to fundamental questions about the energy transition: what are the drawbacks of the current system? What needs to change? How do we plan a societal transformation? Are there past examples we can draw inspiration from? And also, what is the role of public opinion in achieving these goals? Whether or not you agree with the proposed solutions, it is through contributions like this that public debate is enriched and moves forward.

Who else should read it and why?

Anyone who wants to understand the role of the economy in the ecological crisis. Be warned: this book may not be accessible to all readers, but that is surely its strength. Whether through the number of references and how they are contrasted, or the scientific approach to the narrative, I was pleasantly drawn into the authors' rigorous line of reasoning. The topic of planning is complex, and one may not share all the positions taken in the book, but it is impossible to remain indifferent to such a work.

Comment bifurquer. Les principes de la planification écologique, Cédric Durand and Razmig Keucheyan, 256 pages.
