The Banque de France, the Directorate General of the Treasury, the Jacques Delors Institute (IJD), the Louis Bachelier Institute (ILB), the Caisse des Dépôts Research Institute, and the European Savings Observatory (OEE) are hosting an exceptional morning session dedicated to a critical issue for the future of the European economy: mobilizing long-term savings to finance businesses.
As an official G7 event, this gathering will bring together economists, researchers, regulators, and policymakers to explore concrete solutions for better channeling household savings toward productive investment.
Since the Covid-19 crisis, European households have held historically high levels of savings. However, these savings remain largely invested in liquid, short-term products, while European companies continue to rely primarily on bank debt for financing.
At a time when investment needs are substantial—spanning energy transition, digital transformation, reindustrialization, and economic sovereignty—mobilizing long-term savings is a vital lever for strengthening Europe’s competitiveness.
This morning session will foster a unique dialogue between academic research and institutional expertise to identify the reforms, incentive mechanisms, and financial tools needed to build a genuine Savings and Investment Union.
The G7 label highlights the importance of this meeting within international discussions on financing growth and developing European capital markets. It reflects the commitment of the partner institutions to contribute to the strategic debates that will shape the future of investment in Europe.
