André Lévy-Lang: A Founding Figure of the Institut Louis Bachelier Has Passed Away

It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of André Lévy-Lang, President and Founder of the Institut Louis Bachelier, on Saturday, August 8.

André was far more than the founder and President of our Institute. He shaped its ambition, guided its development and, above all, championed with unwavering conviction an idea that was close to his heart: bringing academic research into dialogue with the economic and financial world, in order to better understand the transformations taking place in our society and to inform the decisions of tomorrow.

On a personal level, his passing affects me deeply. A few months ago, at a particularly painful time for the Institute following the passing of Jean-Michel Beacco, André placed his trust in me by asking me to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer of the ILB. “By entrusting you with the keys to the ILB, I am entrusting you with its future,” he told me. “And I know that we share what matters most: tenacity, a love of science, and a commitment to acting in the common good.” Today, I fully appreciate the responsibility that this trust represented, as well as his desire to see the project he had helped build continue, evolve and renew itself.

André loved ideas, debate and encounters. He embodied a rare intellectual curiosity, a contagious energy and a remarkable ability to look towards the future. He had a profound respect for scientific research, which he believed could genuinely help inform action. Driven by this conviction, he consistently sought to bring researchers, public institutions and economic stakeholders together around the major challenges of our time.

André’s passing is a profound loss for the entire Institut Louis Bachelier community. We have lost a major figure in our history, but his intellectual and human legacy remains strong, along with the ambition to carry forward and further develop the project to which he devoted so much.

On behalf of all the teams at the Institut Louis Bachelier, I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones, as well as to all those who knew him, worked alongside him and held him in high regard.

The best way to pay tribute to him will be to carry on. To continue bringing ideas and scientific research to life, to build bridges between research and society, to open up new paths, and to pursue with the highest standards and ambition the project to which André gave so much.

We will continue this journey with a deep awareness of all that we owe him.
