Created in 2008 in response to the severe subprime financial crisis, the Institut Louis Bachelier (ILB) is a private, partnership-based research network in economics and finance, bringing together academics, professionals, and public authorities.
It is based in Paris, in the former Stock Exchange building at the Palais Brongniart.
It is a unique structure built on French excellence in applied mathematics for finance and economics. Its name pays tribute to Louis Bachelier, a French mathematician who, in 1900 under the supervision of Henri Poincaré, defended a groundbreaking thesis titled “Probabilities and Speculation.”
Completely overlooked for more than half a century, his work was rediscovered in the 1960s and went on to become one of the mathematical foundations of modern financial markets.
The mission of the ILB is to promote research and modeling in economics and finance, in order to provide French economic stakeholders with a decisive competitive edge. Open collaboration is a key driver of innovation, and fostering it lies at the heart of ILB’s work.
The ILB operates under the structure of a non-profit association (Loi 1901), governed by a Board of Directors, created by two public-interest foundations: the Risk Foundation (FDR) and the European Institute of Finance Foundation (EIF).
These foundations have chosen to pool their resources while maintaining their autonomy and their distinct yet complementary missions — respectively in fundamental research and applied research.
As an operational research entity, the ILB coordinates, in synergy with the two foundations, a team of engineers — the ILB Labs — and provides R&D advisory services in two fields: data science (DataLab) and ESG analysis (ESG Lab).
The ILB’s capabilities are amplified by its network-based functioning, which positions a central team of scientists and managers to initiate projects, oversee their financial and administrative management, steer scientific monitoring, and contribute to the dissemination of results.
More than ever, collective intelligence is essential. Only a strong network can simultaneously encourage the creation of new ideas, support the development of projects, and accelerate their implementation. The Institut Louis Bachelier has therefore built an exclusive ecosystem: the expertise and excellence of French research in applied mathematics to finance and economics are strengthened by partners committed to developing responsible economic models.
