Nosra Ben Fradj, Prospective Spatial Analysis of Biomass Supply for Cellulosic Ethanol Industry in France.

Résumé : This paper aims at assessing the biomass supply of the prospective cellulosic ethanol production by 2030 in France. We use a spatialized modelling approach based on the coupling between two mathematical programming models, i.e. the agricultural supply model AROPAj and the French energy-transport model GéoMIRET (TIMES generator). Two contrasted scenarios, i.e. high and low estimate scenarios were built in order to determine the conditions and potential of cellulosic energy crop production.

The two scenarios differ in energy crop technical route, straw availability for energy use and in possible mobilization, or not, of grassland and conserved areas for dedicated cellulosic biomass production. A detailed spatialized analysis is conducted to identify the most important factors that drive the optimal facility location and supply. Results are particularly sensitive to methodology of biomass price and availability definition. In a competitive context of biomass usage, facility size options and process efficiencies can also be determinant.
