Summary The Yellow Vests movement has introduced many questions about territorial inequalities into the public debate. This Note aims to analyze the local determinants of discontent among a part of the population. We study five characteristics of local living conditions: employment, local taxation, private and public facilities, real estate, and associative ties. We measure the evolution of these dimensions within each commune over the last few years and analyze their predictive power on three symptoms of discontent: the mobilization of the Gilets jaunes, the variation of the abstention rate during the presidential elections, as well as the discontent declared by the citizens.
